Director John Tiffany and the National Theatre of Scotland caused a huge stir last year with Black Watch. Now they return to open the official festival with a new version of Euripidesís great tragedy, The Bacchae. Savage, comic and intensely lyrical, The Bacchae powerfully dramatises the conflict between the emotional and rational sides of the human psyche. The charismatic actor Alan Cumming, returns to the Scottish stage for the first time in 17 years to play the hedonistic god Dionysus. Pictured Alan Cumming with Tony Curran who plays Pentheus.
