The annual Up Helly Aa Festival, Lerwick, Shetland Islands, 27th January 2009. Up Helly Aa celebrates the influence of the Scandinavian vikings in the Shetland Islands and has employed this theme in the festival for over 100 years. The event culminates with up to 1000 'guizers' (men in costume) throwing flaming torches into a Viking longship. Pictured each year the Guizer Yarl creates a bill of proclamation which is written out and hung in the town square.
