  • An artwork to commemorate British service men and women killed in Iraq, including many from Scotland is now on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh until 15th February 2009. Queen and Country has been brought to Edinburgh by the Art Fund, the UK's leading independent art charity...Created by official war artist and Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen, in collaboration with 136 families whose loved ones lost their lives in Iraq, Queen and Country consists of a large oak cabinet with vertical drawers containing a series of facsimile postage stamp sheets. Each sheet is dedicated to a fallen member of the Armed Forces and features a photographic portrait chosen by their family member. Until the stamps are officially issued by Royal Mail, McQueen considers Queen and Country imcomplete...Pic shows Lance Corporal Allan Douglas, The Highlanders, died January 2006, aged 22

  • EDINBURGH, UK: The wife of the Lockerbie bomberAisha Al Megrahi marches with her family down Edinburgh's Royal Mile in a  candle-lit vigil to highlight alleged miscarriages of justice - Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.  Her husband Abdelbaset ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was dying of prostate cancer in a Scottish prison.

  • A service was held today at Drysdale Cemetery near the town Lockerbie in the Scottish Borders to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Lockerbie Bombing.  On the 21st December 1988 at 19:03 Boeing 747-121, N739PA Maid of the Seas, operating on Pan American World Airways Flight 103 from London Heathrow to New York Kennedy Airport and cruising at 31,000 feet exploded at position 55¡ 07? N / 003¡ 21? W above Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. All 16 aircrew and 243 passengers aboard the aircraft died. Two major portions of the aircraft wreckage fell on the town of Lockerbie, the impact and resulting fireball accounting for the lives of 11 residents of the town: 21 homes had to be demolished and many more required substantial repairs.
